Planning for the future of a loved one needing long term care - whether at home, in a memory care unit, or a skilled nursing facility - can be complicated. For most middle and upper class older adults, Medicaid cannot be relied upon as the solution to financing home care, home health care or assisted living.

However, not just people with low income and few assets, may be eligible for Medicaid in a nursing facility. In fact, individuals in a better financial position who have suffered an abrupt illness or accident or who have spent the bulk of their assets on their care, may be eligible. Many of these individuals and couples can be helped by a Medicaid attorney with a strategy to establish their eligibility..

Unlike Medicare and VA benefits, which are federal benefits programs, Medicaid is a program offered through a federal and state partnership, so every state’s plan is a little different. Tovah Mitchell is an attorney licensed to practice in North Carolina and can provide advice about the NC Medicaid program.
